New EU security rules at airports – Useful Malaga airport links
Malaga airport is well connected by public transport and passengers, Málaga commuter trains directly serving the airport from the center of Malaga and Fuengirola, through Torremolinos and Benalmadena, an airport bus linking the bus station in Marbella and other places of the province.
The number 19 bus run by EMTSAM runs a service to Malaga Bus Station and the City Centre and costs 1 Euro. The bus runs from 6 am - 12 midnight and departs from the arrivals section in both terminals 1 and 2. Malaga airport is undergoing major improvement works at the moment.
The third terminal and larger multi storey car parks are presently being constructed, which are expected to open in 2008. The 90% of passengers use terminal two and, for this reason, it would be wise to arrive early for your flight. As is typical, you should have yourself with enough time to check in to your flight, get through security and find the right terminal in Malaga Airport. besides time for security is needed, but you will need time to park too.
Parking is the greatest problem. P2 is almost always full and should be avoided. P1 outside the old terminal is quite difficult to get to or from the main terminal T2. Best parking options are either the enclosed P0 which is by the entrance roundabout near the San Miguel factory. From here take the 10min frequency free green shuttle bus. Otherwise drive right down to P3, which is free and does have security although it is more open. The free 15 minute frequency green shuttle bus provides an excellent service 24 hours a day. (Frequency 30min 01.00h to 06.00h).
When dropping off friends you can use the terrace at departure level as before but parking is strictly enforced and you will be marshalled to stop in land and will have 20 seconds for passenger to get out so be ready for the scramble.
When collecting friends use one of the car parks mentioned above. Don't even think of waiting outside the arrivals hall of T2 where the situation is chaotic to the point of amusement.
Private car parking with shuttle bus services are working well. If collecting or dropping off a hire car follow the company instructions to the letter.
Upon arrival at the airport, you have different transportation options available for you to reach your destination. The most convenient is a car hire company. There are quite a few car hire services in the airport, while other companies will pick you up from the airport. It is, of course, a good idea to book a car hire in advance to ensure a car will be available when you arrive.
PrivateTaxis are another option and can take you from the airport to your destination in Malaga or other cities. The rate charged is based on the distance to your destination.
Public transportation from the airport is also available although it´s less confortable than a private taxi. Larger groups can take the public minibus which stops at ten locations throughout the Costa del Sol region. Smaller groups can use the shuttle coach, which is less expensive.
You must reserve transportation on the shuttle in advance. There is also one direct bus which runs form the airport to the Marbella bus station. Information on the Malaga airport bus can be found at the information desks in the terminal. Finally, there is a train transfer from the airport located outside the international terminal. The train comes every half hour, as the ride to the city is only twelve minutes.
The train goes from Málaga airport to Málaga city and Fuengirola every 30 minutes. The first train from Málaga airport to Málaga city is at 07.00 and to Fuengirola at 05.58. The last train from Málaga airport to Málaga city is at 23.45 and to Fuengirola at 22.43.
The train station is outside the new terminal very close.Take the lift in the arrivals hall up to the departures hall. Walk outside onto the upper level parking area and turn right. Follow the signs over the footbridge to the train station.
The bus stop is located just outside the main arrivals hall at the right hand. There is a frequent urban bus service from Málaga airport to Málaga city, line nº 19, every 30 minutes.
